Fikri Elma finished the 1961–62 season as top scorer, in the third of the 13 consecutive seasons Ankara Demirspor spent in the top flight. The club had been a founding member of the Süper Lig, then called the Milli Lig, when it started in 1959.

The club began with the railway itself. Employees of the Turkish State Railways (TCDD) set it up in 1930, and it is one of 38 Demirspor clubs across Turkey with the same origin. That is why the nickname, Demiryolcular, meaning Railway Workers, is shared with the others. It also gave the 1947 Turkish Football Championship an odd shape. In the final group stage Ankara Demirspor finished ahead of Fenerbahçe and Adana Demirspor, a fellow railway club, and took the title. Ankara's own league was won the same year, the third of five titles there between 1939 and 1959.

The top flight ended in 1971 with relegation, and the club has not been back since. The 3. Lig title of 1995–96 brought promotion, and play-offs took the side up again in 2014–15 and 2017–18.

Home is a small ground in the Yenimahalle district of the capital, with room for 1,520. The city's main derby, the Başkent Derbisi, is against MKE Ankaragücü. Gençlerbirliği and Ankaraspor are older rivals.
