Eight men signed off on Fethiyespor on 23 March 1933, with Nevzat Yergüz in the chair, and for a while the club carried a different name, Ege Gençlerbirliği, before settling on the one it plays under now. Fifty-one years passed in amateur football before it joined the 3. Lig in 1984 and turned professional.

The club's defining afternoon came decades later, in the Turkish Cup. On 4 December 2013, with Fenerbahçe sitting top of the Süper Lig, Fethiyespor went to the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium and won 2–1, Onur Okan scoring the goal that put the leaders out of the competition. That same season the club won the 2. Lig play-offs and returned to the top flight, only to go back down after finishing 16th.

Elsewhere the record reads more modestly: a 3. Lig title in 1994–95, and a run through the 3. Lig play-offs in 2021–22 that took the club back up to the 2. Lig. Fans, organised under the name Apaçiler, know the team by the nickname Akdeniz'in Şimşekleri — the Lightning Bolts of the Mediterranean, a reference to Fethiye's place on that coast. Matches against Muğlaspor are still called the Muğla Derby, with Bodrum FK making up the other side of the regional rivalry.

Behind all of it sits the Fethiye İlçe Stadyumu, and behind that, still, the eight men who put their names to a football club in a small Aegean town in 1933.
