Within Maldonado department, Atenas has been the team to beat for decades. Four Campeonato de Clubes Campeones del Interior titles, the last of them in 2001, mark the club out among Uruguay's interior sides specifically.
Primera División football arrived only once the club won its promotion play-off in 2008, and Atenas spent the 2009–10 and 2014–15 seasons at the top level. A fourth-place finish in a Torneo Intermedio group in 2018 stands as the high point of that spell. Home matches are played at Estadio Atenas, formally named after José "Pepe" Frade, which holds 6,000.
The national championship itself has eluded Atenas. Every honour it has collected has come at departmental, regional or interior level.
