Guido Sosa's goal against Atenas de San Carlos in 2025 was worth a trophy: 1-0 in the final of the Torneo Competencia of Uruguay's Segunda División Profesional.

The club that won it had, not long before, been playing outside the professional structure altogether. In 2022 Tacuarembó took the Primera División Amateur title on 43 points and with it the right to climb back into the second tier. The 2013-14 Segunda División championship had carried them up to the Primera División, and in the Clausura of the season that followed they finished sixth before the drop resumed.

Tacuarembó sits in the north-central interior of Uruguay, capital of the department that shares its name, a long way from the Montevideo clubs that dominate the domestic game. The football club there is young by Uruguayan standards. It was admitted to the first division in 1999, and that admission is what the club counts as its beginning, though the work of putting it together started the previous November.

Home is the Estadio Ingeniero Raúl Goyenola, which holds 12,000. The red and white of the shirts gave the team its names: El Rojo del Norte , the red of the north, and around town simply El Tacua.
