Bangu has taken the Campeonato Carioca twice, and the second of those, in 1966, came at the expense of Flamengo, beaten 3–0 in the final. Eighteen years earlier the club had set something larger in motion: the 1951 Copa Rio, a tournament FIFA later recognised as the first international club world championship, won by beating Fiorentina.

The factory that gave the club its name was British-owned, and it was two of its managers, Andrew Procter and Thomas Donohoe, who put the side together with the workers on 17 April 1904, in the Bangu district of Rio de Janeiro. The nickname Proletário still carries that origin. So does something rarer for Brazilian football at the time: Bangu fielded black and mixed-race players from as early as 1905, well before the sport's leading clubs opened their doors in the same way.

Moça Bonita, the ground built in 1947, holds a little over nine thousand, a modest figure against the stadiums of the clubs Bangu measures itself against on derby day. The oldest of those meetings is against América-RJ, known as the Clássico Bisavô, the great-grandfather derby, a name that says plainly how far back the rivalry runs. There is also Campo Grande, and beyond them the four clubs that have long dominated Rio football: Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense and Vasco da Gama. Against that weight, Bangu's 1985 runner-up finish in the Campeonato Brasileiro stands out — a result that sent the club into the following year's Copa Libertadores.
