Portuguesa RJ currently plays in the Campeonato Carioca, the Rio de Janeiro state championship it returned to in 2015 after winning a promotion play-off. The top-flight crown has still eluded the club, though its trophy cabinet is not bare — the silverware there has come from a different competition altogether.

The club was formed on 17 December 1924 by a group of Rio businessmen, among them Constantino Paiva, who had watched Portuguesa's namesake in Santos build a following. Because bigger clubs in São Paulo and Santos already carried the Portuguesa name, the local press settled on Portuguesa da Ilha — a nod to Ilha do Governador, where the club is based — and the shorter Lusa stuck alongside it.

Home matches are played at the Estádio Luso-Brasileiro, which the club took over in 1965 from the old Jockey Club Guanabara on the island. Locals call it the Estádio dos Ventos Uivantes — the stadium of howling winds — and it seats just 5,044.

Two World Cup winners closed out their careers in Lusa's red and black: Vavá, twice a champion with Brazil, stayed at the club until 1969, and Zózimo, also a two-time winner, turned out there in 1965.

That different competition is the Copa Rio, where the club has been champion in 2000, 2016, 2023 and 2025. Matches against Madureira are still billed locally as the Clássico Carioca.
