Football arrived there through two separate clubs: Fidalgo Football Club, founded on 8 August 1914, and Magno Football Club, a year older. They merged in 1933 into Madureira Atlético Clube, and a further merger in 1971, with a tennis club and a basketball club, produced the multi-sport Madureira Esporte Clube that carries the name today. The club still counts its age from 1914.

The team plays in grena, blue and yellow, worn as vertical stripes with blue shorts — the colours behind the nickname Tricolor Suburbano, the suburban tricolour. Home matches are played at Estádio Aniceto Moscoso, also known as Conselheiro Galvão, where the operating licence for Campeonato Carioca and Copa do Brasil fixtures currently caps attendance at 3,314.

Madureira has never won the main Campeonato Carioca, finishing runner-up in 1936, 1937 and 2006, when it beat Friburguense 5-3 on aggregate to lift the Copa Rio. Waldo Machado, who became Fluminense's all-time top scorer with 319 goals, also passed through as a young player.
