The club now known as Belediye Derincespor carries a history of reshuffling in its paperwork. The line runs from Derince Belediyespor, formed in 1943, through a 2014 sale to businessman Şahin Çavuşoğlu that turned the football side into a joint-stock company, to a 2016 rebrand under a club previously known as Kocaeli Demirspor, which took on the municipal side's name and standing.

What that lineage produced on the pitch came slowly. The breakthrough arrived in the 2011–12 season, when Derincespor won the Bölgesel Amatör Lig Group 1 and reached the third tier for the first time.

The Sarı-Lacivertliler, named for their yellow and navy blue, play in front of just 1,000 seats at the Derince Suni Çim Stadı.

Their fixtures against Gölcükspor and Körfez FK are matches between sides drawn from the same stretch of Kocaeli Province. Locally the meetings go by "Kocaeli Derbisi" or "Kent Derbisi".
