Three neighbourhood clubs from Şanlıurfa — Kahraman Uyanışspor, Beşiktaşspor and 11 Nisanspor — merged in 1969 to give the region a single side, registered on 6 March that year with Mustafa Kılıç as its first president. Founder Mustafa Dişli chose the colours himself: yellow and green, for ripe wheat heads and the shoots beneath them, a reference to the fields surrounding the city.

The nickname, Ceylanlar — the Gazelles — comes from the goitered gazelle native to the surrounding steppe. The club took the TFF 2. Lig (Turkish Football Federation's second division) Beyaz Group title in 2011–12, and, more recently, beat Bucaspor 1928 3–0 in the play-off final on 15 June 2023 to go back up to the TFF 1. Lig. This latest stay lasted two seasons, ending in relegation after 2024–25.

Since 2010 the club has held a "brother club" agreement with Trabzonspor. The rivalries that matter locally lie elsewhere: with Uşakspor, in a fixture known simply as the Urfa–Uşak derby, and, closer to home, with Karaköprü Belediyespor, the neighbouring Şanlıurfa municipality side whose meetings are billed as the Şanlıurfa Derbisi — the one derby that never leaves the city.
