In 2021, on the way to a World Cup qualifier, the Belize squad's bus was stopped in Haiti by an armed gang. Its best results have come closer to home, in Central American competition.

The high point is 2013. Fourth place in the Copa Centroamericana, the tournament formerly called the UNCAF Nations Cup, earned Belize a place at that year's Gold Cup. There they reached the group stage.

The team's most dependable scorer in that period was Deon McCaulay. He is the all-time leading scorer with 28 goals in 63 caps. Woodrow West holds the appearances record. The nickname on the shirt is The Jaguars, and the fans' own is "The Unbelizeables". The jaguar returned to the badge in February 2023, when a new logo was unveiled with six stars, one for each district of the country.

The fixture that carries the most weight is against Guatemala. The territorial dispute between the two countries has long hung over those matches. The home kit is a white shirt with blue sleeves, white shorts and white socks, and the away kit is all blue. Home games are played at the 5,000-capacity FFB Stadium in Belmopan.

The team's international record begins on 19 February 1928, when the side, then representing British Honduras, beat Honduras 1–0 in Belize City. The first match under the name Belize came on 8 December 1983, two years after independence, and ended in a 0–2 defeat by Canada. FIFA membership followed in 1986 and CONCACAF membership in 1992.
