In Bergisch Gladbach, a town in North Rhine-Westphalia, FC 09 joined TSV Zanders in 1919. In 1973, it merged with SSG Bergisch Gladbach and became SSG 09. The original name, SV Bergisch Gladbach 09 , returned only in 2008.
The men's high point came early. In 1953 they won the German Amateur Championship, beating Homberger SV 3–2 in the final. They now play in the Regionalliga West, the fourth tier. Their local fixture is the Berg-Derby against Eintracht Hohkeppel. The academy sent Bastian Oczipka and Stefan Reinartz on to Bayer Leverkusen.
The women's team, playing as SSG 09, won nine German championships between 1977 and 1989, seven of them in a row from 1979 to 1984 apart from a gap that ended in 1988 and 1989 with two more. They also took the DFB-Pokal three times, in 1981, 1982 and 1984.
The department left in 1996 for TuS Köln rrh.
She won her titles in Bergisch Gladbach and later coached the German national team.
