CF Benfica

The Estádio da Luz sits in the north of Lisbon, a bowl built to hold roughly 64,000 people.

Benfica formed on 28 February 1904, and the split that shaped Lisbon football came three years later, when eight of its players walked out to join Sporting CP — the origin of what is still called the Derby de Lisboa. The other fixture that matters here is O Clássico, against FC Porto, part of a rivalry among the "Três Grandes" that has run through most of the league's history.

No player defines the club's European years like Eusébio. Between 1961 and 1975 he scored 473 goals in 440 matches and won the Ballon d'Or in 1965, the first African-born footballer to do so. Rui Costa, who played for the club across two spells, now serves as its president.

Domestically, Benfica has been the country's dominant force: 38 Primeira Liga titles and 26 wins in the Taça de Portugal. The academy has kept the club relevant in a different way, sending players such as Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, Jan Oblak and João Félix on to the continent's leading sides.

The European Cup has not returned to Lisbon since 1962.
