The Battery formed in 1993, when a group of local enthusiasts led by Tony Bakker put together a side with no template to follow: four years later they became one of the founding members of the new A-League. In 1999 they became the first non-MLS club in the country to build its own stadium, on Daniel Island. That chapter closed in 2019, when owner B Sports Entertainment sold the club to Rob Salvatore, and by 2020 the Battery had relocated to Patriots Point Soccer Complex in Mount Pleasant, a ground that holds 3,900 with room to grow toward 5,000.

Four league titles mark the club's history, won a decade or more apart — USISL Pro League in 1996, the A-League in 2003, USL Second Division in 2010, USL Pro in 2012 — each a different competition under a different name, which says something about how many times American lower-division football has reorganised itself under Charleston's feet. In 2008 they reached the final of the U.S. Open Cup and lost to D.C. United. Fifteen years later, in 2023, they went further than they had in a generation, winning the Eastern Conference of the USL Championship before falling to Phoenix Rising FC on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Nick Markanich carries the club's scoring record now, 30 goals in the 2024 season, a mark that stood for over two decades under Paul Conway before he broke it. Mike Anhaeuser is the other constant in the story: a player from 1994, then head coach from 2004 to 2021, long enough to outlast several of the leagues the club has played in. The rivalry that matters most is regional — North Carolina FC and Charlotte Independence, the three clubs' meetings gathered under the Southern Derby, with bragging rights tallied by supporters themselves in the Southern Derby Cup. The Battery return to USL Championship duty still carrying the weight of how close they came in 2023.
