Monterey Bay have been in the USL Championship since 2022. The 2025 season brought a run in the Jägermeister Cup, the League One Cup competition, though it ended without a trophy — the club still has none.

The team exists because another one did not survive. Fresno FC folded after the 2019 season, and the franchise that came out of it was reconstituted on the Monterey Peninsula in February 2021. Ray Beshoff, the founder and majority owner, chairs the board.

Home is Cardinal Stadium on the California State University campus in Seaside, a 6,000-seat ground. The supporters' group, Union 831 , takes its name from the area code.

The colour scheme reads like a description of the coastline: Crisp Blue, Kelp Blue, Dune Yellow and white. There is no nickname.

But the name that comes first in the club's own records is Walmer Martínez .
