Chemnitzer FC

The one league title in Chemnitzer FC's history came in 1967, when the side played as FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and won the East German top flight, the DDR-Oberliga. The club had been split off from the sports community Chemie Karl-Marx-Stadt only a year earlier, in 1966, when the football department was made independent. The title followed that separation within a season.

Cup finals went the other way. FC Karl-Marx-Stadt reached the FDGB-Pokal final in 1969, 1983 and 1989 and lost each one, so the trophy the city wanted most never arrived.

The names track the century. The club began on 2 December 1899 as Chemnitzer SC Britannia, became Chemnitzer BC 1899, and was reformed as Chemnitzer BC 1933 after bankruptcy. After the war it was dissolved and re-established as SG Chemnitz Nord. It then became BSG Fewa Chemnitz in 1948 and BSG Chemie Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1951. After reunification it took the name Chemnitzer FC in 1990. Since then the club has won the Regionalliga Nordost twice, in 1999 and 2019, and each title carried promotion to the 3. Liga.

Money has caused as much trouble as results. Chemnitzer FC filed for bankruptcy in 2018, and the professional side was carried on by a new company, Chemnitzer FC Fußball GmbH. The Stadion an der Gellertstraße, opened in 1934, was rebuilt in 2016 and holds 16,061. Two rivals share a regional map with the Sky Blues: FC Erzgebirge Aue, in the Erzgebirgsderby, and FSV Zwickau.

In the 2024-25 season Chemnitzer FC plays in the Regionalliga Nordost, the division it has already won twice.
