Greuther Fürth II

A reserve side exists so that a first team has somewhere to send its young players, and this one has been doing that job since the parent club, SpVgg Fürth, came into being on 23 September 1903. For most of that time it went by the plain name of Amateure, or simply SpVgg Fürth II.

The name changed twice, each time because of somebody else's decision. In 1996 the parent club merged with TSV Vestenbergsgreuth to form SpVgg Greuther Fürth, and the second team became SpVgg Greuther Fürth Amateure. Nine years later the German Football Association (DFB) ruled that every reserve side must use Roman numerals, and the team became SpVgg Greuther Fürth II.

Today it runs as an Under-23 squad in the Regionalliga Bayern, the fourth tier. Its players train and play at the Konrad-Ammon-Platz, also called the Charly Mai Sportanlage, part of the Sportpark Ronhof Thomas Sommer complex and a ground for 3,000 spectators. The green and white shirts and the nickname, the Kleeblätter (the Shamrocks), come from the senior club.

The fixture that matters most is the Franconian Derby against 1. FC Nürnberg II. Two reserve sides contest it.

The team cannot go up: as a reserve side, it is barred from promotion to the 3. Liga and does not enter the DFB-Pokal. Its results in the Regionalliga Bayern, and before that in the Regionalliga Süd and the Oberliga Bayern, have brought no title.
