Chippa United

Siviwe Mpengesi, a businessman known simply as "Chippa," did not build a club from nothing. In January 2010 he bought the franchise rights of Mbekweni Cosmos, a third-tier side from Paarl, for 400,000 rand, and renamed it after himself. Within a season, the newly christened Chippa United had won the Vodacom League and moved up to the National First Division.

A second-place finish and a play-off win took the club into the Premier Soccer League in 2012, only for it to finish 15th and drop straight back down. Chippa United won the National First Division again in 2013/14 and returned to the top flight, still without a major trophy to its name.

The club has moved almost as often as it has changed division. It left Cape Town for Port Elizabeth in 2014, then ran into financial trouble the following year and was placed under outside management. Playing in front of sparse crowds inside the 46,000-seat Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium proved unsustainable. By the 2015/16 season the club had shifted its home games to the far smaller Buffalo City Stadium in East London, where a 16,000 capacity suited the gate better. The arrangement only became permanent in 2023, when Chippa United signed a 20-year lease on the ground. With the move away from Cape Town went its old rivalries with Ajax Cape Town and Santos; nothing in the Eastern Cape has replaced them.

Among those who wore the white-and-blue shirt was Benjani Mwaruwari, the Zimbabwean forward who had played for Manchester City before turning out for the Chilli Boys.
