In January 2021, a consortium built around the state cotton company SODECO bought a modest side then playing as Taneka FC in Natitingou, moved it to Ouidah and renamed it Coton FC. The club Lionel Talon took charge of had been founded in 1999.

Coton Sport Ouidah won the Benin Premier League in 2021–22, 2022–23 and 2023–24. The players carry the nickname Les Cotonniers.

Ouidah already had a club of its own, Jeunesse Sportive d'Ouidah, and matches between the two are known locally as the Derby de Ouidah. The football side of the operation is run by Victor Zvunka, a former France international, as sporting director.

The run of titles took Coton Sport Ouidah into the CAF Confederation Cup.
