Nothing in Porto-Novo has ever settled anything between AS Dragons and ASOS quietly. The two clubs share the city, and every meeting between them is played as the Derby de Porto-Novo.
Dragons have given that rivalry a lot to argue about. No club in Benin has won the national championship as often — twelve titles between 1978 and 2003. Six Coupe du Bénin wins sit alongside that, along with the one-off Coupe de l'Indépendance in 2000.
The club was founded in 1972, reportedly by Jean-Pierre Houézèvi Agondanou, a former mayor of Porto-Novo, and the "Orange et Noir" tag has stuck. What still gets talked about is 1987, when Dragons reached the semi-finals of the African Cup Winners' Cup with a side good enough to be remembered as a Dream Team — Ghana's Abédi Pelé played in it, and Nigerian goalkeeper Peter Rufai started his international career there that same year. Moussa Latoundji , who came through as a player before managing the club and later the national team, is part of the same era's legacy.
The Stade Charles de Gaulle, where Dragons play in front of up to 15,000 people, has not seen a league title added to that list since 2003.
