Palmeiras had won the Copa Libertadores three months earlier, and in April 2021 Defensa y Justicia beat them on penalties to take the Recopa Sudamericana — after the Copa Sudamericana of 2020. Neither came with a domestic title behind it: in Argentina's championships the club has won nothing.

That is unusual for a side from Florencio Varela, founded on 20 March 1935. The yellow and green date from 1981; before that the club turned out in blue and white.

El Halcón — the Falcon, or the Falcon of Varela — came from a bus line of that name run by a club president.
