Ten goals to one, against Hungary at the 1982 World Cup in Spain, and El Salvador's only other appearance came twelve years earlier, in Mexico. Both times the team went out in the group stage, but the road to 1970 had already given the country its own name for a fixture rarely spoken of lightly: the qualifying matches against Honduras spilled into a war, and the meetings between the two since carry a weight no scoreline explains, known in the region as the Football War Derby.

La Selecta played its first international in Guatemala City on 14 September 1921, losing 7–0 to Costa Rica at the Independence Centenary Games — a rough start for a federation that would take until the following decades to find its footing regionally. That footing came in 1943, with the CCCF Championship, and again in 1954, with gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games. Beyond that, the record reads as a long string of near misses: runners-up in the CONCACAF Championship in 1963 and 1981, third in 1977, and third six times over in the UNCAF Nations Cup between 1995 and 2017, without ever winning it.

Raúl Díaz Arce scored 39 goals for the side between 1992 and 2001, while Darwin Cerén's 108 caps stand as the appearance record. The team now trains under Hernán Darío Gómez, who took charge in March 2025, working out of the Estadio Cuscatlán — at just over 44,800 seats on its FIFA-regulated capacity, the largest ground in Central America and the Caribbean, and the stage La Selecta will need to fill if a third World Cup is ever going to follow the first two.
