Ethiopian football took shape around the same institutions the country was building for itself in the early 1940s, and the national side formed in 1943 was a founding member of the Confederation of African Football in 1957, having joined FIFA five years earlier. Ethiopia reached the final of the second Africa Cup of Nations in 1957, took third place two years later, and then, hosting the tournament in Addis Ababa in 1962, beat the United Arab Republic to become champions of Africa. Six years on, at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, the Walia Ibex took silver — still the only Olympic football medal won by an African team. Ethiopia missed the Cup of Nations through the 1970s, and after 1982 did not appear at the tournament again for thirty-one years. The federation itself was suspended by FIFA in 2008 over government interference in its running. CECAFA Cup titles in 2001, 2004 and 2005, and under coach Sewnet Bishaw the team finally returned to the Cup of Nations in 2013, ending that long absence.
