Senegal reached one final in six attempts at the Africa Cup of Nations before winning it: in 2021, against Egypt, the game went to penalties. Aliou Cissé, who had captained the side in the 2002 final defeat to Cameroon, coached the winning team nineteen years later. That earlier final was the country's first, and the pattern repeated more than once — Senegal also finished runners-up in 2019, beaten 1–0 by Algeria, and again in 2025, losing to Morocco.

The Senegalese Football Federation was founded in 1960, joined CAF three years later and FIFA the year after that. The national team's own peak on the world stage came earlier than the continental one: at the 2002 World Cup, in their first appearance in the competition, they beat the holders France in the opening match and went on to the quarter-finals before losing to Turkey. In 2022 they went a round further, reaching the last sixteen.

Sadio Mané is the country's all-time leading scorer; Idrissa Gueye holds the record for appearances. The fixture against Nigeria carries its own name, the Jollof Derby, and has twice decided a tournament outright.

Senegal now play their home matches at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, on the edge of Dakar, which holds 50,000 — a considerable step up from the Stade Demba Diop in the capital, where the team was based for decades before the move.
