The stadium's own history is bound up with tragedy and rebuilding, but the team that calls it home carries the older name of the two: Red Devils, coined by a journalist in 1906 for the red shirts and, pointedly, for the speed of racing driver Camille Jenatzy.

The federation itself dates from 1904, and the side lost its first international, 3–3 to France in Uccle, before joining FIFA twenty days later as a founding member. What followed took decades to pay off. Belgium won Olympic gold on home soil in Antwerp in 1920, then spent much of the rest of the century missing tournaments outright — the 1974 and 1978 World Cups, Euro 2004, the 2006 World Cup among them.

Between those two poles sits a genuine peak under Guy Thys, who took the team to the 1980 European Championship final and to fourth place at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. The next one arrived only after 2010, when a generation built around Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku — the last of them the side's record scorer with 93 goals — held the number one FIFA ranking for over three years under Roberto Martínez and beat England in the 2018 play-off to finish third in Russia.

The fixture that still sharpens attention more than any other is against the Netherlands, played as the Low Countries derby, with France standing as the older rival — the same France that Belgium had already faced, and drawn with, in Uccle in May 1904.
