Guillermo Abascal has a new job. The Spaniard has taken charge of Yverdon Sport, third in Switzerland's Challenge League, replacing Martin Andermatt, who was sacked at the end of September.

Abascal, 37, managed Spartak Moscow from June 2022 to April 2024, taking charge for 74 matches. He has since worked in Switzerland before, with Chiasso, Lugano and Basel, and his last post was at Mexican side Atletico San Luis, from May 2025 to March 2026. Terms of the Yverdon deal have not been disclosed.

Yverdon, founded in 1948 and playing at the Stade Municipal, have 16 points from nine matches this season. Mamadou Kanoute leads the scoring with six goals, ahead of Romain Gollard on five and Varis Tasar on four.

Alexander Mostovoi, the former Russia midfielder, was scathing about the move.

"I did not know a club like that even existed — some amateur outfit, presumably. Well, at least it is in the second division or wherever it is. It shows Abascal's real level. That is where he should have started. People like Abascal, and I could name a few more, have become a textbook example of how coaches get appointed in our Premier League," he said.
