Saint-Denis, just north of Paris, built the Stade de France for the 1998 World Cup, and it was there that the ground earned its place in the country's football memory: France beat Brazil 3–0 in the final, Zinedine Zidane scoring twice with headers. The national team has called that ground home since, now in front of crowds of up to 81,338.

Two World Cups mark the side's high points, 1998 and 2018, with Didier Deschamps at the centre of both — captain the first time, manager the second, having taken charge in July 2012. Between those wins sits a European Championship double, 1984 and 2000, and either side of them the near-misses: runners-up in 2006 and again in 2022, when Kylian Mbappé's hat-trick in the final against Argentina still ended in a penalty shootout loss at Lusail. Mbappé remains the squad's all-time leading scorer.
Germany and Italy supply the fixtures with the sharpest edges — the meetings with Germany known as the "Derby des Champions," those with Italy as the "Derby de l'Amitié" — rivalries worn in by decades of tournament football rather than proximity alone.
