The team began as an administrative act. The federation that runs it was set up on 5 April 1913 as the United States Football Association, and it had provisional FIFA membership by 2 August of that year. Full membership followed on 27 June 1914. The name became the United States Soccer Football Association in 1945 and the United States Soccer Federation in 1974.

There is no home ground. The side moves between cities, from Seattle's Lumen Field to Chicago's Soldier Field, and from Austin's Q2 Stadium to MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. It is known as the Stars and Stripes and the Yanks, and it plays in white shirts and navy shorts.

The results that people go back to are spread thinly across the century. In 1930 the team finished third at the first World Cup. In 1950 it beat England 1–0 at a World Cup, a result still quoted as the standard for an upset. Hosting the 1994 tournament brought a place in the Round of 16. In 2002 the team reached the quarter-finals, its deepest run since 1930. Regionally the record is steadier: seven CONCACAF Gold Cup titles between 1991 and 2021, and three CONCACAF Nations League titles in 2021, 2023 and 2024.

Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey each scored 57 goals for the team, a shared national record. Christian Pulisic is the most prominent of the current generation.

Mexico is the opponent that matters most, and CONCACAF's own description of the fixture is the "hottest rivalry" in the confederation. Canada has become a sharper opponent in recent years. The team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, its first absence since 1986.
