The fixture Peru care about most is the Clásico del Pacífico against Chile.

Ricardo Gareca scored the goal that eliminated Peru from the 1986 World Cup qualifying. Peru did not reach another World Cup for 36 years. When they finally did, in 2018, Gareca was the manager. A year later he took them to the 2019 Copa América final, the team's best result at the tournament since 1975.

That 1975 title was the second of two, after 1939, when the tournament was played in Peru. It came from the generation built around Teófilo Cubillas, the best young player of the 1970 World Cup and South American Footballer of the Year in 1972, and the defender Héctor Chumpitaz, who won more Copa América titles than any other player. Their side reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 1970, where Brazil beat them. The team's first World Cup, in 1930, had produced a 1-0 win over Uruguay.

The national team played its first official match on 1 November 1927. Its record scorer is Paolo Guerrero with 40 goals.

Home games are in Lima at the Estadio Nacional del Perú, which holds 40,272. Regulations often limit ticket sales to 39,402.
