About the player
Joao Grimaldo came through the Sporting Cristal academy in Lima and made his mark there quickly: a first-team debut in 2020 and a regular starting spot from 2021, in the course of which he won the Liga 1 title and the Copa Bicentenario and racked up 113 appearances and 16 goals for the club. He was part of the Peru squad at the 2024 Copa América, where the team went out in the quarter-finals to Uruguay.
The move to Europe did not go to plan at first. Signed by FK Partizan in July 2024, Grimaldo managed only five league appearances without scoring before the Serbian club sent him out on loan. That loan, to Latvian champions Riga FC in March 2025, he played 36 matches, scored five goals and set up ten more, and helped Riga win the 2025 Virslīga title. He also featured in a UEFA Conference League qualifier against a familiar name — Sparta Prague.
By early 2026 had made 11 appearances for the club, scoring once.
