Independence for Nyasaland arrived in 1964, and the country's football authorities organised themselves under a new name: the Football Association of Malawi, formed in 1966 out of what had been the Nyasaland national team. FIFA recognised the association in 1968, and the Confederation of African Football admitted it on a provisional basis in 1973 before granting full membership the following year.
The team plays in red, green and black, taken straight from the national flag, and carries the nickname "The Flames." That name has been tested rarely on the continental stage.
Closer to home, the record reads differently. Malawi won the CECAFA Cup three times, in 1978, 1979 and 1988, and were beaten finalists at the COSAFA Cup in 2002 and 2003 before finally taking a trophy there in 2015, beating Zambia 1–0 in the final of the Plate competition.
Kinnah Phiri belongs to both eras of that story. He won 117 caps and scored 71 goals in Flames colours, then returned as coach to take the team to the 2010 finals where Mwafulirwa's goal against Algeria was scored.
