Angola took the field for the first time on 8 February 1976, losing 3–2 to Congo. The team has been known ever since as the Palancas Negras, after the black sable antelope, and turns out in red shirts, black shorts and red socks.

Angola qualified for the World Cup in Germany that year — the only time they have reached the tournament — and got out of a group with Mexico and Portugal without losing to either, drawing 0–0 with the Mexicans and 1–1 with Iran, Flávio scoring the goal that day. Flávio finished his international career with 34 goals in 91 caps. At the Africa Cup of Nations, where Angola have appeared ten times since 1996, the furthest they have gone is the quarter-finals, in 2008, 2010 and again in 2023, without ever reaching a final.
