No fixture on the calendar carries more weight for Egypt than the one against Algeria. The two sides met in a 2010 World Cup qualifying play-off in Khartoum that turned violent among the travelling supporters, and the aftermath poisoned relations between the federations for years afterward. Matches against Tunisia sit in the same bracket, argued over across North Africa long before either side steps onto the pitch.

The Egyptian Football Association took shape on 3 December 1921, though the national side, known as the Pharaohs, had already played its first international a year earlier, losing to Italy at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics. What followed was decades of dominance in African football rather than on the world stage: seven Africa Cup of Nations titles, three of them won back to back between 2006 and 2010, a run no other side has matched. Hassan Shehata coached that side through all three finals, with Hossam Hassan captaining the team and, in the years before, scoring more goals for Egypt than anyone else — 69 of them across a career that ran from 1985 to 2006. Hassan returned to the national team in February 2024, this time as head coach.

The World Cup has told a different story. Egypt reached the Round of 16 in 1934, in just its second-ever international tournament appearance, then waited until 1990 to qualify again, and again in 2018, when Mohamed Salah's form carried much of the campaign. Both those later trips ended in the group stage. Only in 2026 did the Pharaohs get back to the knockout rounds, falling to Argentina. Home games now split between the 86,000-capacity Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria and Cairo's own international stadium, but no ground has yet hosted the one prize that has eluded this generation: a Egypt team that has ruled its continent for a century still has no World Cup quarter-final to its name.
