Carlos Queiroz stays on as Ghana coach

Carlos Queiroz is back in charge of Ghana, less than two months after walking away from the job in the wake of the World Cup.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed on Thursday that the 73-year-old has signed a new contract, with no length disclosed. Queiroz had taken the post in April, with barely two months to prepare before the finals, after Otto Addo was sacked following heavy defeats to Austria and Germany.

The GFA cited his experience and the need for a stable environment.

Ghana opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over Panama, settled by a stoppage-time goal from Caleb Yirenkyi, then drew 0-0 with England and lost 2-1 to Croatia. The Black Stars finished third in Group L, behind England, and were eliminated by Colombia in the round of 32, beaten 1-0. Given Ghana had failed even to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, reaching the knockout stage in the United States, Canada and Mexico was no small recovery.

Queiroz framed the next Africa Cup of Nations, in 2027, as the starting point for a squad he wants built towards the 2030 World Cup. Queiroz has managed nine sides, but the 1999 United treble and his 2004 Madrid stint are the only ones that matter.

The next international window, this month, will be Queiroz's first assignment since returning.
