Tim Cahill remains the reference point for anyone talking about the Socceroos: 50 goals in 108 caps, a scoring run through three World Cups, and a hand in the 2015 Asian Cup win that stands as the country's one major title. His finish against Japan in 2006 is the kind of moment the team is still measured against.
Australia's first international match came on 17 June 1922, a 3–1 defeat to New Zealand in Dunedin, and that fixture set the tone for a rivalry that has outlasted every tournament change since. The two countries have played for the Soccer Ashes, a trophy first created in 1923 and revived in 2023, and for years settled their Trans-Tasman meetings through a dedicated cup, which Australia won four times between 1986 and 1995.
The nickname Socceroos did not come naturally. Fans voted for "Emus" in 1967, and it took a journalist, Tony Horstead, coining an alternative in 1972 to give the team the name that stuck through the 1974 World Cup campaign — its first appearance at the tournament.
The Asian Cup win in 2015 followed a runners-up finish in 2011, and Australia has since made the World Cup a regular fixture rather than an occasional breakthrough.
With no fixed home ground, the team's biggest occasions tend to migrate between the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Accor Stadium, and the other major venues across the country, drawing crowds shaped by whichever city gets the fixture that year.
