South Sudan played its way to a CECAFA Cup semi-final in 2021, ten years after the country itself came into being, and finished third.
The Bright Stars, as they are known, took shape in 2011. The team they measure themselves against is still Sudan itself.
Home games are played at Juba Stadium, which holds 7,000. The kit has changed with the team's sense of itself: for years the players wore red shirts with white shorts, but since 2022 yellow has taken over, drawn from the national flag along with the black trim.
Neither the World Cup nor the Africa Cup of Nations has yet seen South Sudan reach the finals.
Nicolas Dupuis took charge through 2024 and 2025, and when he left, the job passed to Cyprian Besong Ashu on an interim basis in March 2026. The federation runs largely without a website, keeping in touch with supporters through social media instead.
