In the FIFA Arab Cup they finished runners-up three times, in 1963, 1966 and 1988. The regional WAFF Championship followed in 2012.

The following year the Abbasiyyin Stadium in Damascus, which held 30,000, closed, and FIFA had already barred the team from playing at home in 2011. The green shirt comes from the national flag; red, worn during the Ba'athist era, has gone.

The neutral venues have shaped the team's biggest campaigns. In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, Syria reached the inter-confederation playoff. They drew 1–1 with Australia in Malaysia, then lost 2–1 in Sydney and missed out. At the 2019 Asian Cup they reached the last 16, their best showing there, and lost 2–3 to Australia.

Their oldest rivalry is with Lebanon. It goes back to the first official international, played in Beirut on 26 April 1942, which Syria won 2–1. In a 2022 World Cup qualifier in Saida the match was halted with Syria leading 3–0 after a riot. Matches against Jordan are known as the Al-Shami Derby.

Omar Al-Somah, whom supporters call "the Syrian Zlatan", now captains the side and has scored 23 goals. The record he is chasing belongs to Firas Al-Khatib, who scored 36. The team went out in the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup, played in 2024.
