Amman is where Jordan's national team is run from and where it mostly plays. Most home games are at the Amman International Stadium, which holds 17,619, and the King Abdullah II Stadium is used often as well. The team's nickname, Al-Nashama, comes from the Nashama tree. In the Jordanian dialect the word carries chivalry and courage.
The Jordan Football Association (JFA) dates from 1949. It joined FIFA in 1956 and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in 1970. In 2004 Jordan reached the Asian Cup quarter-finals and touched 37th in the FIFA rankings, its highest position. That team had Amer Shafi in goal. He went on to make 171 appearances, more than anyone else has for the country. Hamza Al-Dardour, with 31 goals, is the top scorer.
The recent years brought bigger stages. At the 2023 Asian Cup in Qatar, Jordan went through to the final and lost it 3–1 to the hosts. In December 2025 it reached the final of the FIFA Arab Cup and lost 3–2 to Morocco after extra time. By then the team, coached by Jamal Sellami, had already qualified for its first World Cup, sealed in June 2025 with a 3–0 win over Oman.
The tournament itself, in 2026, went the wrong way. Drawn in Group J with Argentina, Austria and Algeria, Jordan lost 1–3 to Argentina, 1–3 to Austria and 1–2 to Algeria, and finished bottom without reaching the Round of 32. Ezzaki Badou was head coach for the finals.
