Mauritania's fiercest football rival is Senegal, a fixture rooted less in trophies than in the border war the two countries fought between 1989 and 1991.
The team, known also as Al-Murabitun, played its first international on 25 December 1961, against Madagascar, and joined FIFA three years later. Reaching the finals for the first time was largely the work of Corentin Martins, who coached the side from 2014 to 2021; under him Mauritania also returned to the tournament in 2021 and went on, in 2023, to reach the last 16 for the first time.
No senior trophy has followed.
Souleymane Diallo has made more appearances for the national side than anyone else, close to eighty caps, while Cheikh Moulaye Ahmed Bessam remains its leading scorer with a dozen or so goals. The squad has long drawn on dual nationals from France and Senegal to fill it out.
Mauritania plays its home fixtures at the Stade Olympique de Nouakchott, renovated to hold 40,000 for the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations. Since November 2024 the team has been led by Aritz López Garai, who took over from Amir Abdou with qualification for the next Africa Cup of Nations as the immediate task.
