Nigeria beat Burkina Faso 1–0 in the final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. Four years later they went one better in the group stages of the tournament and stopped at the semi-finals, finishing third in 2017; in 1998, on home soil at the Stade du 4 Août, they had already reached fourth place. The name under which they play, Les Étalons, comes from the horse of Princess Yennenga, a figure in the founding legend of the Mossi kingdoms; a rarer nickname, Les Faucons Pèlerins, refers to the peregrine falcon.
Charles Kaboré carried the team through both the 2013 final run and the 2017 campaign, and his 102 caps stand above anyone else who has worn the shirt. The scoring record belongs to Moumouni Dagano, with 34 goals, while more recently Bertrand Traoré has carried the attacking weight in a squad still built on the reputation those earlier campaigns established. Games against Mali carry their own name, the Derby of West Africa, and the table goes out of the window whenever the two meet.
The federation behind the national team, the Fédération burkinabè de football, was set up in 1960 and joined FIFA and CAF four years later. The first match under its banner came on 13 April 1960, against Gabon, before Burkina Faso had even played its way into the continental reckoning it would reach decades afterward.
