Liberia have not been near a World Cup finals, and the closest they came was 2002, when they finished the qualifying group runners-up behind Nigeria. The Lone Stars carry that name into a football landscape still shaped by what the country went through: the First Liberian Civil War, from 1989 to 1996, forced withdrawals from competitions.

That run of form had a name. He remains the nation's all-time top scorer with 18 goals in 75 caps, and in 1995 he won the Ballon d'Or, the only African player to do so. He later became President of Liberia, serving from 2018 to 2024. Liberia's two appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations, in 1996 and 2002, sit either side of the war years: in 1996 they beat Gabon 2-1 before losing to Zaire, and in 2002 they held Mali and Algeria to draws but fell to Nigeria, exiting both times at the group stage.

The team is run out of Monrovia by the Liberia Football Association, founded in 1936 and affiliated to CAF since 1962 and FIFA since 1964, and plays in red, white and blue at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, a ground with a 22,000 capacity.

Liberia's oldest rivalry runs against Sierra Leone, contested as the Mano River Derby and named for the river the two countries share. Ghana matters too, if for one reason above others: it was against Ghana, in 1979, that Liberia recorded its first ever victory.
