FC Zurich

The club grew out of two older sides, FC Turicum and FC Excelsior, whose players formed FC Zürich on 1 August 1896. One of them, Juan Gamper, became the new club's first captain before leaving for Barcelona, where he went on to found FC Barcelona. Zürich played in blue and white at first, switched to red and white in 1898 to avoid clashing with Grasshopper, then reverted to blue and white once Grasshopper temporarily dropped out of the league — the colours have stayed ever since.

For decades this was not only a football club. Rowing, boxing and athletics sections ran alongside the team until money troubles forced a split on 25 May 1934, after which FC Zürich carried on as football alone. The women's side took its current form in 2008, when FFC Zürich Seebach merged in as FC Zürich Frauen, and by 2022 the club had moved its youth and women's set-up into a new home in the Hirzenbach district.

Thirteen championships stretch back to 1902, and ten Swiss Cups back to 1966, but the most recent title says more about the club than the tally. Relegated for the first time in its history in 2016, with president Ancillo Canepa under heavy criticism for how the club had been run, FC Zürich came back up the following year and rebuilt from there — a process that closed with the championship of 2022.

Across the city, Grasshopper remain the opponent that matters most. The Zürcher Derby is played out between two clubs, and little else.
