Neuchâtel Xamax

No fixture on the Swiss calendar carries more weight in the canton than Xamax against Young Boys, but the closer rivalry, the one that actually decided things in the 1980s, was with Grasshopper and Servette for the title itself — three clubs trading the league lead through a decade Neuchâtel had no business competing in, given the size of the city behind it.

The club that won those titles was not, strictly, the one that exists today. Gilbert Gress built the side that took the championship in 1986–87 and 1987–88, the second title arriving with the club also lifting the Swiss Super Cup for the third year running. Roy Hodgson kept the European run going after him. Uli Stielike captained the 1988 side before returning as coach; Stéphane Henchoz came up through the academy and went on to Liverpool. That version of Xamax traced back to 1970, when FC Cantonal and FC Xamax, the two oldest clubs in the city, merged — Cantonal contributing a championship of its own from 1915–16, decades before the merger.

It collapsed in January 2012. Neuchâtel Xamax SA went bankrupt and was thrown out of the Super League after its owner, Bulat Chagaev, was arrested; a new entity started that same year in the fifth division. It won promotion out of it, then out of the fourth division, then merged with FC Serrières in 2013 to form the club now called Neuchâtel Xamax FCS — which kept the old titles and the old history as its own, climbed back to the Challenge League title in 2018, and returned to the Super League before dropping back down after relegation in 2020, where it has stayed since.

Six cup finals, no cup win, across both eras. What has held constant through the bankruptcy and the mergers is the Stade de la Maladière, rebuilt on the same site between 2004 and 2007: 12,000 seats on the shore of Lake Neuchâtel, close enough to the water that the wind off it has ended more than one passing game.
