Étoile Carouge

Johan Djourou spent his first years as a footballer at Étoile Carouge, in a youth setup he passed through between 1995 and 2003 before Arsenal signed him and Switzerland capped him. He was not the only one to move through it in that window — the club's academy also sent out the goalkeeper Vincent Rüfli, the striker Zeki Amdouni and the defender Mathis Magnin.

Carouge itself formed in 1904, when several local sides playing in Geneva's leagues merged into one club, and stayed within those regional competitions until 1923, when it stepped up into the third tier. It has worn dark blue and white ever since and is still known locally as Les Stelliens. Home games are played at the Stade de la Fontenette, which holds 3,600.

The club's best spell came in the second tier, Ligue Nationale B, which it won four times — in 1977, 1988, 1994 and 1997. It went on to add a fifth title of sorts in 2023-24, taking the Promotion League, the third division. The Swiss Cup never came its way, though Carouge reached the semi-final twice, in the same years it topped the second division, 1977 and 1988.

Foreign names have passed through Fontenette too. The Algerian full-back Djamel Mesbah, who had played for Milan and his national team, turned out for the club in 2019. Moroccan midfielder Samir Bouganem was there across two spells either side of the millennium and was part of the squad that won the D2 title in 1997. Togolese international Tadjou Salou stayed longer, from 1999 to 2003.

Djourou remains the name Carouge is best known for.
