The UEFA European Under-21 Championship needed a feeder side once it replaced the old Under-23 competition, and West Germany answered with a squad of its own in 1976, playing out a 2–1 win over Italy that November in its first outing. The team has never settled into a single home; the German Football Association moves its fixtures around the country instead, from the Eintracht-Stadion in Braunschweig to the Sportpark Ronhof in Fürth, with the squad based out of the DFB-Akademie in Frankfurt am Main between matches.
Three European titles carry the team's history: 2009 against England, 2017 against Spain, and 2021 against Portugal, each won by a single-goal margin. England keep turning up on the other side of the biggest nights — 1982, 2025 — and it was England again who denied Germany a fourth title this year, winning 3–2 after extra time. Stefan Kuntz presided over the two most recent wins before handing over to Antonio Di Salvo, who has already taken the side to one final of his own.
What the age group is really remembered for, though, is what it sends upward. Manuel Neuer, Mesut Özil, Mats Hummels, Marco Reus and Joshua Kimmich all passed through it on their way to the senior team, which makes the Under-21s less a competition in their own right than a proving ground the DFB has run for close to fifty years.
