Twice in its first four seasons, Greece's under-21 side had something to show for itself: the Balkan Youth Championship, won in 1969 and again in 1971. It has not managed a continental trophy since.

The 1998 squad carried a captain's armband that would go on to mean more than most: Giorgos Karagounis led that side before lifting the European Championship with the senior team in 2004, alongside Kostas Katsouranis and Angelos Basinas, both of whom had also come through the under-21 ranks. None of the three is remembered for their under-21 goals — that record sits with Nikos Liberopoulos and Lampros Choutos, who scored 15 apiece for the age group.

There is no fixed home ground to point to. Matches have been played at Leoforos Alexandras in Athens, at Livadia Municipal Stadium and at Serres Municipal Stadium, the venue shifting with the fixture rather than settling in one city. The team wears the blue and white of the senior side and plays under the Hellenic Football Federation, run today with Giannis Taousianis in charge of the under-21s and Dimitris Papadopoulos overseeing the youth national teams as a whole.

Recent form has swung both ways: a 4-0 win over Northern Ireland in November 2025, followed by a 2-0 defeat to Germany in March 2026. The side traces back to 1968, when the federation set up an under-21 team it called, from the start, Ethniki Elpidon — the National Team of Hopes.
