The Icelandic Football Association has run the age group since 1978, when the side lost its opening friendly to Norway in Fredrikstad, and at home people call it Unglingalandsliðið rather than anything borrowed from English.
For a country with so small a pool of players to draw on, reaching a European final tournament is not routine, and Iceland managed it twice. In 2011, in Denmark, they finished third in their group but still walked away with a place in the UEFA Team of the Tournament for Kolbeinn Sigþórsson , who had scored in the wins over Denmark. A decade later they qualified again, only to exit at the same group stage.
The squads from that era are the reason the shirt carries weight now.
What the team still has not done is turn a group-stage finish into a run to the later rounds of the Under-21 Championship. Two qualifications for the finals stand on the record; a semi-final never has.
