One European Under-21 title sits on the record, from 1988, when Laurent Blanc carried the tournament as its Golden Player. A second final followed in 2002, lost to the Czech Republic, and a semi-final finish came as recently as 2025.
The Toulon Tournament tells a different story: fourteen wins there, spread from 1977 through to 2025.
And it is the alumni list that gives the age group its real weight. Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Karim Benzema all passed through on their way to the first team; more recently Kylian Mbappé and Eduardo Camavinga did the same.
There is no fixed home ground — matches move between Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 stadiums around the country — though the Stade Auguste-Delaune II in Reims, with room for around 21,000, has become the closest thing to a base, used for training as much as for fixtures.
Thierry Henry took charge as head coach before handing over to Gérald Baticle in August 2024. The team is currently working through qualification for the 2027 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
