Each qualifying cycle for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship brings the same question to Luxembourg City: not whether the team can reach the finals, but whether it can pick up a point along the way. It has never reached that stage, and the campaigns tend to be measured in draws rather than wins.

The side has entered every qualification round since the championship itself began in 1978, the year the team was set up. It has played 165 qualification matches, winning seven of them. Fourteen ended in draws, the rest in defeat. Only two of those wins came in an actual qualifier: 3–1 against Belgium in 1986, and 1–0 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2011. A 1–1 draw with Georgia in March 2014 was enough to end one of the longer winless runs in the team's history.

Home games moved to the Stade de Luxembourg after it opened in 2021, taking over from the Stade Josy Barthel. The Red Lions nickname carries over from the senior team, as do the red and light blue colours.

The age group exists to feed players through to the senior side, and several have made that step, Maxime Chanot among them. Mario Mutsch went the other way: he played for the U21s, went on to captain the senior national team, and returned in July 2025 as head coach of the age group where his own career started.
