They travelled to Varaždin on 2 June 2007 to play Croatia and lost 2–0. The Faroe Islands Football Association had set up the under-21 team in 2006 for one purpose: to bridge the gap between the under-19s and the senior national side. The qualifying campaign for the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship gave the new team its first assignment, and Heðin Askham and Bill McLeod Jacobsen ran it jointly from the start.

But the wins that have come stand out against the run of play — a 1–0 defeat of Russia's under-21s in 2009, and a 2–1 win over Iceland in September 2025 that arrived under Ólavur Mikkelsen, appointed head coach in March that year.

Jóannes Bjartalíð made 18 appearances between 2015 and 2018 before moving on to Fredrikstad and later FC Kyzylzhar. Home matches are shared with the senior team's ground, Tórsvøllur in Tórshavn, capacity 5,800.
