Péter Gulácsi's 26 caps for Hungary's under-21 side remain the most anyone has won in the shirt. Dominik Szalai once scored a hat-trick against San Marino wearing it, in 2009.

The team traces back to 1976, when UEFA lowered its youth competition age limit from twenty-three to twenty-one and Hungary's Under-23 side effectively became the Under-21s. It played its first match that October, beating Greece 7–0 in Kecskemét. As an Under-23 team it had won the 1974 European Under-23 Championship, seeing off East Germany 6–3 across two legs, then reached the final again in 1976, this time losing to the Soviet Union.

Zoltán Gera closed that loop in his own way. Capped many times for the senior team, he took over as Under-21 head coach in 2019 and steered the side to the 2021 European Under-21 Championship, where Hungary played as co-hosts — their first finals appearance since 1986. He stayed in the post until March 2024, when Zoltán Szélesi succeeded him.

Hungary have no fixed home ground for the age group; qualifying matches move between venues, with the Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion in Budapest used most often. The kit stays close to the senior team's: red shirts, white shorts, green socks.
